- Republican Senate candidates nationwide running against budget deal – David Catanese, Politico
Most Republican candidates running for Senate are against the 11th hour short-term budget deal Republicans cut with President Obama to avert a government shutdown. According to a POLITICO survey of more than a dozen of the top GOP challengers, an overwhelming majority said they would have opposed the compromise that was passed in the upper chamber by a swift voice vote late Friday.
None of the candidates explicitly said they favored a shutdown, but just two — Texas Senate candidates Tom Leppert and Elizabeth Ames Jones — indicated they would have supported the agreement.
Nationwide — in states much less red than Texas — candidates are running away from the compromise, but not Elizabeth Ames Jones and Tom Leppert.
