A new Rick Perry showed up at Tuesday night’s GOP presidential debate. But whether he was effective — or likeable — is, well, debatable.
Really sloppy, well, editorializing in a news lede. But we suppose the Trib just can’t help itself at times.

There has been much hand-wringing across Texas about changes being considered at the state’s flagship four-year institutions in response to a public perception that college and university faculty need to be more productive. Tuition at public institutions around the state has risen, and students are amassing significant debt. Yet graduation rates in the state remain low, causing some students, parents and the politicians who represent them — and control the state’s higher ed funding — to wonder if they’re getting their money’s worth from the faculty.
Just a few months ago, Texas Tribune was leading the charge in defense of the higher ed status quo, so the appearance of this graf, cautious though it is, represents real progress. Baby steps!
Substantively, it might also be worth noting that of all the issues raised by the OWS crowd, the complaints about graduating with $100,000 in debt and a useless [Fill-in-the-Esoteric-Academic-Genre] Studies degree might actually have some bearing on the broader higher ed debate.
